CENTRAL REFERENCE LIBRARY
The Central Reference Library, Kolkata is the National Bibliographic Agency of the country. At present it comes under the purview of the Ministry of Culture, government of India. It is administered by a Librarian who also acts as the General Editor of its publications. The primary objective of this institution is to compile and publish the Indian National Bibliography, an authentic record of books published in 14 different Indian languages including English. Apart from that it also publishes the Index Indiana; an index to articles in contemporary Indian language periodicals also comes under its ambit.
Today it is functioning as the National Bibliographic Agency of the country.
At present it is entrusted with the responsibility of implementation of the following schemes.

INDIAN NATIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHY: MONTHLY PUBLICATIONS
INB ANNUAL VOLUMES
The Index Indiana publication available for sale is the 5 years cumulated volume for
1999-2003. The experimental issue of October – December 2015 is available on the
website in pdf. format.
UPDATING & REDESIGNING OF WEBSITE
The CRL website www.crlindia.gov.in is upgraded from time to time. The publication list of INB (Roman as well as languages) is updated. The vacancies occurred in the C R L are also uploaded. The CPENGRAM for Pensioners grievances has the direct link in the website. The various programmes of the institution are announced there.
The CRL has recently taken an initiative to redesign the Website as per the GIGW norms with the help of NICSI. A detailed project proposal has been submitted to the ministry for administrative approval of the project.
INCREASING USE OF HINDI FOR OFFICIAL PURPOSES
The media cell is regularly updated the activities and programmes of CRL to the MOC media cell. There is active presence in Face book, WhatsApp, website etc.
All the correspondence to MOC are done through e-mail. Regularly updating the data on different Government portals. Fund management and e-payment are done through PFMS.
MEETING WITH PARLIAMENTARY STANDING COMMITTEE
CRL has attended the meeting of the Department related Parliamentary Standing committee on 7th November 2016. Activities and Achievements of CRL were discussed in the meeting.
CRL participates regularly in the Book Fairs organised in different parts of the country. During this period, CRL participated in the World Book Fair, Pragati Maidan, New Delhi organised by NBT in the month of January 2016. CRL participated in Patiala Book Fair at Punjab from 3 -9th October 2016 organised by the NBT. Also Participated in the Kochi International Book Festival (KIBF) from 2nd December – 11th December 2016. A Publishers’ Meet was organized at the book fair on 10th December 2016 to make publishers aware of the Delivery of Books Act.
Every year, the Librarian’s Day is organised on the auspicious birthday of Shri S.R. Ranganathan. This year CRL has organised it in collaboration with the National Library on 12th August 2016. Prof. Pijush Kanti Panigrahi, Professor of LIS, Calcutta University delivered the keynote address. Dr. Arun Kumar Chakraborty, DG, National Library, Dr. P.R. Goswami, Former Director, CSL, Prof. N. Lahkar, Gauhati University, Assam and Dr. K.K. Kochukoshy, Librarian, CRL spoke on the occasion. As part of the Librarian’s Day, one essay competition was organized on 6th August 2016 in collaboration with Kendriya Vidyalaya, Command Hospital.
As part of the Ministry of Culture endeavor to high light the need for clean India, the Central Reference Library, Kolkata put its all out effort to publicities the Swachhta Pakhwada.
The Vigilance Awareness Week and Rashtriya Ekta Dewas were observed on 31st October 2016. All the staff members assembled and took the pledge.
On 26th November 2016, CRL observed Constitution Day with reading of Preamble to the Constitution, Offering flowers to the copy of the Constitution and conducted an Elocution Competition among the staff members.
SEMINAR AND CONFERENCES
As part of in-service training, the staff members have been regularly attending the various professional conferences and Seminars. 4 officers from CRL had been attended the Capacity building programme conducted by the NML (National Mission on Libraries) at Kalyani University, West Bengal from 20-24 June, 2016.
DEVELOPMENT OF THE NORTH EAST
On the initiation of Govt. of India with the encouragement of the Ministry of Culture, the Central Reference Library, Kolkata is actively participating in the development of the North Eastern Region. As part of this activity, the CRL regularly organize training programs Workshops and Seminars for Library professionals of the North Eastern region.
